About the Book:

With The Good Left Undone, Trigiani returns to her Italian roots in what she calls the most passionate storytelling of her career. Alternating between the present day and the first half of the 20th century, on the picturesque shores of Viareggio, Italy and the wide pastures of Glasgow, The Good Left Undone brings readers into multiple generations of the Cabrelli family. Matelda, the family’s matriarch, has always been brusque and opinionated. Now, as she faces the end of her life, she is determined to leave no stone unturned, including her own mother’s revelation about her two great loves—her childhood friend, Silvio, and proud Scottish sea captain John Lawrie McVicars, the father Matelda never knew.

The inspiration for The Good Left Undone began on a Sunday afternoon at the historic Saint Andrew’s Church in Glasgow. As a descendant of immigrants from the Italian Alps, Trigiani wanted to explore the situations that would compel a family to emigrate, which brought her to Scotland to research the little-known stories of Italian Scots who had been forced into mass exile in WWII after Mussolini declared war on the Allies. A wedding was underway in the church, and Trigiani couldn’t resist quietly joining the attendees. The village priest discovered Trigiani’s presence after the wedding ceremony, and after learning her name, he invited her to the church’s garden, where she discovered a memorial for the Italian detainees’ lives lost on the SS Arandora Star, sunk by a German U-boat in July, 1940.

The Good Left Undone is a story about family and legacy, love and loss, identity and belonging—and, above all, it is a story that examines the meaning of home while your home is in turmoil. This novel is Trigiani at her absolute best, and readers will embrace her strong and heartfelt female protagonists, layered family drama, and rich Italian history woven throughout every page.

Praise for The Good Left Undone:

“The Good Left Undone is an exquisite gem of a novel, as it flits between present day and the calamitous times of World War II. No one does historical fiction better than Trigiani. You will fall in love with the characters, especially Matelda Roffo. Godere!” —David Baldacci, New York Times bestselling author

“The Good Left Undone is a wildly entertaining story about the life of the remarkable Italian nurse Domenica Cabrelli and her daughter Matelda. The novel is a wonderful love story, rife with sea captains and childhood sweethearts and a family that never gives up on one another. I adored it.” —Ann Napolitano, New York Times bestselling author of Dear Edward

“Adriana Trigiani reshapes the words of Phillip Larkin – ‘the good not done, the love not given, the time torn off unused’ -- as a focal point for a wonderfully agile novel that rounds off the sharp edges of our times."—Colum McCann, New York Times bestselling author of Apeirogon

“Adriana Trigiani never fails to sweep you away with her richly transportive prose. The Good Left Undone takes you through time and across the globe from the Italian coast to the Scottish Highlands as long-held secrets of the Cabrelli family come to light. An emotional and beautiful tale of family, love, and loss.”—Taylor Jenkins Reid, New York Times bestselling author of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Daisy Jones & The Six

“Adriana Trigiani is a gifted, natural storyteller and The Good Left Undone is her at the top of her game. This beautiful, sweeping historical epic about three generations of women paints an exquisite portrait of love, loss, the ravages of time and the price a family pays for its secrets. Brava!” —Kristin Hannah, bestselling author of The Nightingale and The Four Winds
